Battle of Gettysburg
Published in Paperback by Consortium Book Sales & Dist (March, 2001)
Authors: Frank A. Haskell and Franklin A. Haskell
Average review score:

A review of the battle from a present Union officer.
A great read of the historical turning point of the U. S. Civil War. Haskell describes the three days of battle and the aftermath. Haskell was subsequently killed in one of the latter battles of the Civil War. Although inaccurate at places, it gives a first hand account of this battle, and the subsequent suffering of the soldiers. This is a good account of the life of a soldier.

Engrossing first person account of the Battle of Gettysburg
Colonel Haskell's perspective on the Battle of Gettysburg provides intriguing detail and insight omitted by secondary sources.

Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography: An Authoritative Text Backgrounds Criticism (Norton Critical Edition)

Poor Richard's Rich Insights
How many books have you read that you remember thirty-six years later? Ben Franklin's insights into principles of self-improvement, and his love for the adventure of life were not only inspiring to me when I discovered his autobiography in the Holmesburg Library in Philadelphia at age 14, but they still remain motivational for me at age 50! Ben Franklin was the Dale Carnegie of his age. He realized that by following basic core value principles, and by constant practice in the adventure of life, he could not only creatively change himself, but he could positively impact those around him as well. Ben Franklin led a purposeful, creative life. I am thankful that he had the foresight to pass his exhuberance along to us in this his autobiography. It was fun to read. I think I'll read it again. Thanks, Ben.

An outstanding edition of a classic American text
Anyone who has ever taken a literature class in college knows the Norton Critical Editions: an absolutely first-rate version of the text, a healthy supply of contemporary responses and letters, and the best essays yet written about the text. This edition of Benjamin Franklin's "Autobiography" is no exception. The quintessential American Enlightenment figure, Franklin is far more complex than most people think, and far funnier. When it came time to write the Declaration of Independence, the Congress wouldn't give it to Franklin alone, in large part because they were afraid he'd hide a joke in it. One of his most infamous pieces of writing was under the guise of a prostitute being brought before the court for having yet another illegitimate child -- and then attacking the court for making it necessary for her to pursue her profession! And the letter Franklin wrote his own illegitimate son about how to keep a mistress is a classic in and of itself. The only great flaw in the autobiography is that it stops before Franklin ever reaches the Revolutionary War, and thus we don't have the inside story of that perilous time. But anybody wanting to understand Franklin's life, the means to wealth, or the evolution of a brilliant mind will love this text. It's mandatory reading for every American, in my mind.

Boys into Men: Raising Our African American Teenage Sons
Published in Hardcover by E P Dutton (08 May, 2000)
Authors: Nancy, Ph.D. Boyd-Franklin, A. J., Ph.D Franklin, and Pamela Toussaint

Very insightful
My husband and I are the parents of one 2.5 year old boy and one boy on the way. As an African American parent I am desparate for books discussing the special issues that relate to our sons. I found this book to be a great resource and reference.

With all of the issues facing our sons--drugs, gangs, police overreaction etc. it felt good to know that I am not the only one extremely concerned about how to grow my boy into a man.

This book deals with all of the issues I could think of related to raising a black son.

I think it can be a praticular interest to single moms who I believe have a special need.

This book also provides a listing of several other books that one can reference which I found invaluable.

PRICELESS, ENCOURAGING WORDS FOR THOSE IN THE WARZONE......
As soon as I learned that the baby I was carrying was a boy, I instinctively knew that I have to foster the "state of emergency" frame of mind to make him into the shining Black Prince that I wanted him to be, and this book will push you on that path from the jump. It encourages, enlightens and spells out the solutions to keep your precious son on the right path. Nearly every possible scenario is touched on here: encouragement to single mothers and fathers and tips on the ex, homosexuality, the doomed "raise the daughters love the sons" mentality, how to teach him to live in a sometimes hostile, racist world while maintaining self-dignity and respect for others, how not to allow himself to get "dumbed down" by peers, avoiding the temptation of drugs and gangs, etc. This book has more info than you would expect one source to have, and it helped me to understand that raising a responsible, loving, respectful young Black man doesn't have to be a pipedream. If you want to help avert crises before they occur, or need help throughout the one you may in the midst of, this book is priceless. Learn from the case scenarios and advice these 2 parents give from their own lives and others and cherish it.

Breakdance

Authors: William H. Watkins and Eric N. Franklin

Great Book
I recently read this book, and I enjoyed it. It is a great book for beginners and advanced breakers. I learned a lot from this book, and it is written very well. The only thing that prevented this great book from getting five stars, is the clarity of the instructions. I think the author should have been more clear on SOME of the trick explanations. All in all, this is an excellent book, and I definietely reccomend this book to others.

Excellent - but you'll need also a video if...
The book which I bought from zShops is excellent. However, a few things need my comments. Firstly, the terminology has changed a little bit between the release of that book (1984) and today (2001). So if you really want to learn to do those steps that this book instructs to and with the new terminology (such as for example the thing that this book calls only "basic floorwork" is nowadays rather called "6 step"), I recommend to also get some videos which have been directed by Mike Garcia. ....

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Team Building
Published in Paperback by Alpha Books (23 November, 1999)
Authors: Arthur R. Pell, Arthur, Ph.D. Pell, and Franklin C. Ashby
Average review score:

Great book, but not what I was looking for...
This book is honest, entertaining, and jam-packed with great ideas, helpful hints, and how-to's. There is information about everything from reasons for using teams in the workplace, to forming strong ones, to helping yours become more successful. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know anything about working in teams!

Unfortunately, although this book was loaded with so much good stuff, it still didn't have what I wanted. I work in student affairs at a college, and I was looking for a book with activities on team-building to use with student groups. If this is what you're looking for, don't buy this book!

This book has some great stuff for anyone who works with teams, but be careful not to expect any more than concepts and explanations...no activities.

Author's comments
Has your company moved from traditional work groups to a team format? Is it contemplating such a move? Over 80 percent of Fortune 500 firms already are using teams as all or part of their organizational structure. Nobody know how many less well known companies are following suit.

The Complete Idiots Guide to Team Building will teach you the tools and techniques needed to be a successful team leader. It will enable those with previous supervisory experience to become aware of the changes they must make in management style to succeed in their new roles and what they must do to implement them. It will also prepare newly appointed leaders to move rapidly into productive leadership.

Not only team leaders, but also all team members can benefit from reading this book. Why? In many teams, members assume sub-team or project leadership from time to time. In addition, more and more organizations are turning to self-directed teams -- teams that have no permanent leader. All members are expected to be ready to lead a project.

This book is not an academic treatise, but a pragmatic guide to team leadership than can be immediately applied on the job. Read it to become acquainted with the many facets of team leadership. Keep this book handy to refer to when special problems arise.

Whether you are an experienced team leader, starting your first job, or you are preparing for promotion, this book will serve as a road map to successful leadership.

The Consultant's Guide to Publicity : How to Make a Name for Yourself by Promoting Your Expertise
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (April, 1996)
Author: Reece Franklin
Average review score:

Good Book!
I thought that this book was very helpful in teaching about self-promotion. I am interested in Public Relations, so reading this taught me many useful PR tools, such as: how to write a press release, what to include in a press and speaking kit, how to develop a general plan with goals and objectives, where to look for good story ideas, how and why you should develop contact files, and lastly, how to deal with the media. The author was specific and gave realistic examples. There were tables, worksheets, and graphs for the readers to see, which I thought was useful. The information in this book is helpful for anyone who may be interested in promoting themselves, their business/company and/or their services. It is a Public Relations manual in every way, shape, and form! At the end of the book, the author summarizes most of the chapters, so you can look at that section for a quick reference if need be. I would recommend this text because it is not only helpful, but written in a way that keeps your attention and is easy to understand.

Practical publicity & promotional programs for professionals
This extremely accessible guide provides invaluable tips on how to get media attention and become the person to whom the media turns when they need an industry source to substantiate news articles. It details how to determine promotable ideas, identify appropriate media for publicity, and develop publicity devices such as news and press releases, company background information, and press kits. Numerous examples of the author's own publicity campaigns and of techniques that work are included.

Chapter 1 explores the pros and cons of doing publicity yourself, or turning to a public relations agency. Chapter 2 lays the groundwork for your activities as a self-publicist, setting objectives and goals and defining the terms you'll need to know. Chapter 3 gets in the actual planning process. Chapter 4 shows you how to develop unique story ideas or angles. Chapter 5 deals with setting up media contact files and the press kit. In Chapter 6 28 different tools for publicity are discussed in depth.

Chapter 7, "Dealing with the Media" is the most important chapter. If you remember nothing else from this book, get to know this chapter. Chapter 8 shows you how to deal with television and radio interviews. What to do if you slip up and need crisis management publicity is covered in Chapter 9. Finally, the all-important tracking of results, which can and must be done in publicity, is covered in Chapter 10.

Reece A. Franklin founded MarketSmarts, a marketing, advertising and public relations firm based in California in 1992. He has a Bachelor's degree in International Relations from Northern Illinois University and has run publicity campaigns for dozens of entrepreneurs and consultants.

The Deal Makers
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (November, 2000)
Author: Franklin D. Vipperman
Average review score:

Rough & REAL!
The Deal Makers is an expose' of the dark underbelly of the American system of "justice." If you've ever suspected that money and power is the ticket to an innocent verdict in this country, this book will prove it to you! Frank Vipperman's couragous stance is to be commended. The book has its flaws, but none of them detract from the story, which is gripping, factual, and meticulously documented by the author. If you decide to read The Deal Makers, or its sequel, The Cesspool, prepare for a rough ride -- and to have your eyes opened in a way you never expected!

The Deal Makers
Incredible. The writer opens up the truth behind those hallowed halls which destroy so many lives. Everything he charges he backs up with proof. He accomplished things that no other man has ever been able to do. My prayers go out to him. What he went through is shocking. And what he accomplished can only be described as incredible.

Digital Control Dynamic System
Published in Hardcover by Addison-Wesley Pub Co (January, 1990)
Authors: Gene F. Franklin, Michael L. Workman, and J. David Powell
Average review score:

Mr Jones reviews
Generally an excellent book with many worked examples. Unfortunately there seem to be a few irritating errors. One error concerns section 13.3.1. The cost function in this example is set for a bandwidth of 1Hz. This is also indicated in Figure 13.70. However, the parameters a,b given in Figure 13.71 (and those found by the search algorithm) are correct for a bandwidth value of 10Hz. Incidentally, the third edition (student edition) of the book seems to be made of thinner paper than the second edition. I feel the book makes rather too much of quantisation effects and sample rate selection. It might be better to replace these chapters with a new chapter on model predictive control.

Digital Control of Dynamic Systems done right!
This book excellent for anyone interested in the Digital Control of Dynamic Systems. This book is Reccomended as a tool for Matlab implementation of control Systems. Very good book!
